Why recycle | Cantos do Sabiá
João Lucas França – Broadcaster and communicator for the Sabiá Center.

World Recycling Day, May 17, is an important time to reflect on the impact of our consumption habits and the urgency of building a sustainable future.
In Brazil, each person generates an average of 1 kg of waste per day, which results in around 81.8 million tons of solid urban waste per year. The data comes from the Panorama Survey of Solid Waste in Brazil 2023, produced by the Brazilian Waste and Environment Association (Abrema).
Despite our individual responsibility and the amount of waste we produce, we must recognize that large companies, multinationals and agribusiness are the ones that consume the most, deforest, destroy – and don’t recycle. They also pollute the most.
But the question remains the same: In a world of consumption, spending, climate change and so much waste production… why recycle?
And it is to talk about this very important topic that we have invited Monaliza Andrade – an agronomist, PhD in Energy and Nuclear Technologies, and solid waste manager at the Secretariat for the Environment, Sustainability and Fernando de Noronha (SEMAS-PE) – to our virtual table today.

Cantos do Sabiá is the Sabiá Center Podcast! Every week we discuss agroecology, sustainability and politics in the countryside and the city! The podcast goes live every Monday, with the complete interview edition that originally made up the Center’s radio program. https://spoti.fi/31VtUj5
